Problem gambling affects approximately 2.5 million U.S. adults severely, with an additional 5-8 million experiencing mild to moderate gambling problems. Often called a "hidden addiction," problem gambling can significantly disrupt daily life, careers, and relationships while causing substantial social, financial, and emotional harm.

The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) recognizes March 2025 as Problem Gambling Awareness Month with the theme "Seeking Understanding." This initiative aims to:

  • Increase public awareness of problem gambling and available resources
  • Encourage healthcare providers to screen for gambling disorders
  • Remove barriers to treatment
  • Promote open discussions about gambling's impact on communities

Throughout March, organizations nationwide will host educational workshops, special events, and advocacy efforts to support those affected by problem gambling. These activities bring together public health organizations, advocacy groups, professional sports leagues, and gambling operators to address this growing public health concern.

Help is available 24/7 through the National Problem Gambling Helpline:

The helpline provides free, confidential support for individuals and families affected by problem gambling, offering hope and assistance without stigma or shame.
