Private online sports betting is coming to Alberta in Q1 2026, according to Canadian Gaming Association CEO Paul Burns. The province plans to transition from its current single-operator model (PlayAlberta) to an open market system similar to Ontario's.

Expected major sportsbook operators entering the market include:

  • DraftKings
  • FanDuel
  • BetMGM
  • Caesars Sportsbook
  • theScore Bet

The new open market structure will likely mirror Ontario's regulatory framework, potentially including similar restrictions on promotional offers and inducements. This represents a significant shift from the current system where PlayAlberta holds a monopoly through the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC).

Key benefits of the open market:

  • More betting options for consumers
  • Competitive odds across platforms
  • Potential economic boost through tax revenue
  • Possible partnerships with local sports teams (Flames, Oilers, Stampeders, Elks)

While Alberta's population of 5 million is smaller than Ontario's 15 million, the province expects significant gambling revenue with a proposed 20% tax rate. The launch timeline remains subject to change, particularly given recent U.S.-Canada trade tensions that could impact the sports betting sector.

This marks a major shift from previous launch attempts, including the postponed Q4 2024 target date. The move aims to address current market limitations and reduce reliance on grey-market betting platforms currently used by Alberta residents.
