National Council Marks 20th Annual Problem Gambling Awareness Month This March
Problem gambling affects approximately 2.5 million adults in the United States who meet the criteria for pathological gambling, with an additional 4-6 million experiencing mild to moderate gambling problems. Each person struggling with gambling addiction impacts 7-20 people in their families and communities.
The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) designates March as Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM), marking its 20th anniversary in 2023. This nationwide initiative brings together state affiliates, public health organizations, advocacy groups, professional sports leagues, and gambling operators to raise awareness about prevention, treatment, and recovery services.
"The 20th anniversary of Problem Gambling Awareness Month is a milestone worth celebrating," says Keith Whyte, Executive Director of NCPG. "For two decades, this initiative has helped to raise awareness about problem gambling. We hope that this year's events will continue to educate and empower communities across the country and reduce the impact of problem gambling."
NCPG provides free resources and toolkits for organizations participating in advocacy activities throughout March. Participants are encouraged to use the campaign hashtag #PGAM2023 across social media platforms.
